Travel Insurance - A Brief Guide
Embarking on a horseback riding holiday can be an exhilarating and memorable experience, offering the chance to reconnect with nature and explore scenic landscapes from “the best seat in the house”! One essential aspect of ensuring a safe and worry-free trip is obtaining appropriate travel insurance. At Equus, we require all our guests to take on a comprehensive private travel insurance policy at the time of booking – in any case, many of our ride operators would not permit you to ride if you do not have travel insurance.
Spolier alert: You will find out the insurance company we recommend below.
Why is travel insurance so important?
Emergency Medical Coverage
Accidents can happen even in the safest of riding environments. Horseback riding involves inherent risks and, if an accident occurs, having travel insurance with emergency medical coverage can be a lifesaver. Not only that, but you can also “just” get sick and need to see a doctor for a nasty case of the flu! Having a reliable travel insurance policy ensures you receive necessary medical attention without worrying about hefty medical bills, especially in destinations like the US where medical bills can be very costly.
Trip Cancellation or Interruption Protection
Unexpected events, such as sudden illness or family emergencies, can force you to cancel or cut short your horseback riding holiday. Travel insurance can provide financial protection by reimbursing non-refundable expenses (cancellation fees as outlined in our booking conditions, holiday curtailment, flights, etc), allowing you to reschedule or recoup some of your costs.
Coverage for Lost/Damaged Luggage
Proper riding equipment, including helmets and riding boots, is crucial for your safety. Travel insurance can provide coverage in case your gear gets lost, damaged, or stolen during your journey, ensuring you can continue your adventure with the right equipment. If your bag is delayed at the airport (don’t we love a connecting flight…) then your travel insurance will also reimburse the cost of emergency toiletries and gear.
Good to know...
It's important to note that not all travel insurance policies are created equal, and some may not cover high-risk activities like horseback riding unless specified. Ensure you carefully review the policy terms, conditions, and exclusions, particularly regarding adventure sports and activities. A few things to ask about...
- Are you covered for multi-day riding holidays, or just a hack/trek as part of a non-riding holiday?
- If you are riding with big game (on a riding safari) or cattle (on a ranch holiday), is that covered under the terms of your policy?
- Have you booked a high altitude ride (Himalayas, high Andes)? If so, please make sure high elevations aren't excluded from your policy.
If in any doubt we suggest you obtain clarification in writing from the insurer.
Additionally, wearing proper riding equipment, including a helmet, may be required by your insurance policy. Failure to adhere to safety guidelines and use appropriate gear might void your insurance coverage in case of an accident.
Obtaining travel insurance tailored to cover horseback riding activities is a crucial part of the booking process. It ensures that you can enjoy your horseback riding adventure with peace of mind, knowing that you are financially protected in case of any unforeseen events. We recommend you book your travel insurance when confirming your trip and very shortly thereafter to avoid any issues.
Recently, we found that TrueTraveller is a great choice for our travellers (European and UK residents only). They offer different levels of coverage and various "add-ons" that allow you to costumize the insurance to fit your needs.
Please don't wait until the last minute to make these arrangements. You may find it difficult to find a provider that will insure you, and you will not be covered in the event you need to cancel.
Stay safe and make the most of your equestrian journey!
