Super Stallions & Perfect Pyramids: An Egyptian Adventure

Super Stallions & Perfect Pyramids: An Egyptian Adventure

Destinations 0

Everyone should see the pyramids from the back of a horse.

Although it was my second trip to Egypt, I have to admit to being a little apprehensive. While a cold and dark, English winter had kept me from doing as much pre-holiday riding as I normally would, I knew this was one of our (Equus Journeys’) faster trails.

But on that first day, far away from the green grass of home, I realised I’d been worrying about nothing. As I galloped my hardy Egyptian steed across the desert, with these ancient and breathtaking stone structures in full view, I felt happy, free, confident and safe. This is what a riding holiday is all about.

The Giza Pyramids, viewed through the ears

I confess: I’d already seen the pyramids from my hotel. I’d been standing on the rooftop, overlooking a bustling street in the heart of Giza. It was a hazy morning, so my view was far from clear, but the sight of these giant triangular peaks that have long mystified scientists and archaeologists, soaring into the sky, their tips poking through the mist, was still enough to dazzle me. And yet, there was nothing quite like galloping next to them.

It was a flying visit to Giza and Cairo -- we only stayed a day (enough time to see the sphinx, mummies and all that was important)-- before being whisked off to Luxor, the home of my host, Ride Egypt.

Elizabeth and the beautiful black stallion, Drago

It was here, where the murals on the walls were as bright and colourful as the horses’ tack, that I fell in love with a black stallion called Drago. This incredibly beautiful, Arabian horse was spirited and fast but also sweet-natured and sensitive. He was mine for two days, and I felt very lucky to get the chance to ride him.

In truth all the horses, several of whom were stallions, were absolutely wonderful. Though their temperaments varied (there seemed to be one for every riding ability) they were equally brave, sure-footed and willing, not even flinching at the vast array of sounds, sights and smells that bombarded us as we walked through the city’s streets. Their forward-going nature and knowledge of their job was appreciated by all of us on the trip.

Another 'wow factor' for me on this ride was the professionalism of our guides, and their talent for taking videos of guests while cantering and galloping at speed. Ahmed, our leader, did a particularly fantastic job, not only of capturing some great Instagram content, but of engaging with the group and telling us about his country and the horses.

Of course, this trip is not only about riding: it’s also a chance to learn about and immerse yourself in the rich history of ancient Egypt. In fact, I’d say the cultural aspect sets this trip apart from many of our other rides. From Cairo’s impressive 'mummy museum', to Luxor’s soaring temples and the country’s great number of colourful ancient tombs, the sites are sure to impress even the non-museum types.

But for me, a nature lover, the horses were still the best part. I’ll always remember what Emma (the owner of Ride Egypt) said to me towards the end of the trip: “We ruin it for you. Riding at home won’t be the same now.”

I fear she could be right.

Good to know:

  • You'll need a visa to enter Egypt, British citizens can do this online or at the airport and it costs US$25.
  • I would highly recommend reading up a little on ancient Egypt and on the Valley of the Kings before you go.
  • For riding, a buff and sunglasses will come in handy - there were some very dusty canters/gallops!
  • Bring your own shampoo (and conditioner if you use it), as not all the hotels have these.
  • Don't forget your swimming costume, some hotels have pools!
