Bulgaria's Thrace Empire Trail - From Horseback to Hot Tub
I was the last one to arrive, but the anticipation for this trip had been building for months. I’d heard so much about the Thrace Empire Trail from previous guests - stories of long canters, endless fields and warm hospitality – so to say that I was excited was an understatement.
At Sofia’s small airport, finding my group was easy. Katerina was already gathering the riders, and before long, we were all packed into the van and heading three hours south to the starting point of our adventure.
Our group was quite international, with riders from Denmark, Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands. By the time we reached the guesthouse, weary but excited, it already felt like the beginning of something special.
At that first dinner, we were all introduced to rakija, a fiery fruit spirit and a true symbol of Balkan hospitality. We would later find out that it also doubles as the national remedy for shyness, sore muscles and common sense. Needless to say, these qualities proved very handy as the week went on.

From the very first day, we got a taste of what makes this trail so unique: active and free riding. Few places in Europe still offer the chance for true, uninterrupted canters and gallops across wide fields, and Bulgaria is one of them.
Our guides, Maria and Vasko, were exceptional - attentive yet relaxed, always watching to ensure both horses and riders were comfortable.

I was paired with Abdu, a grey Arab gelding. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous at first, but I soon realised we would make a great team. During the first couple of hours, the narrow tracks in the orchards kept the riders in a single file, but before we knew it, the first long flat field appeared, and we were cantering more freely. The horses got a little excited, but that was to be expected, and as the week progressed, we riding out happily and confidently as a group.

I had also been a little apprehensive about visiting Bulgaria in October, given the chance for gloomy and rainy weather. But when we were riding deep in the forests, the different shades of gold and amber simply made the experience more magical.
It's worth noting that on this particular ride, the itinerary is quite balanced and includes a couple of days of riding in the mountains. Naturally the pace wasn't as active (due to the terrain), but the landscapes were fantastic.
"Who knew that moving from horseback to hot tub could feel like such a natural progression?"
Aside from the riding, there was always something else to look forward to each day. One of my favourite activities was the walking tour through Hisarya, a town known for its Roman ruins and mineral springs. Strolling around was like stepping into the pages of a history book.
And after days packed with adventure, arriving at the hotels felt like the cherry on top. Who knew that moving from horseback to hot tub could feel like such a natural progression?

"I realised that Bulgaria had given each of us something quietly special. I left with a happy heart, a sore (but content) set of muscles, and a desire to return soon!"
What surprised me most, though, was the cabin we all shared one night. The open kitchen filled the space with the delicious smells of the host’s cooking. Upstairs, the bedrooms had low ceilings and mattresses on the floor. The whole place felt cosy, comfortable and welcoming. It might not be every rider’s cup of tea, but I felt like it brought people together (and I’m a sucker for a fireplace!)
All too soon, we were saying our goodbyes and, as I spoke to other guests, I realised that Bulgaria had given each of us something quietly special. I left with a happy heart, a sore (but content) set of muscles, and a desire to return soon.

Good to know…
- This trail has long sections of trot and canter, so being riding fit is very important.
- If you are travelling is Spring/Autumn, bring layers for when riding in the mountains, and a waterproof jacket as well.
- Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit -- there’s a pool/hot tub at each hotel.
- Your luggage will often be carried by members of the team -- up and down stairs, and into/out of the support vehicle -- so if you can be mindful of weight when packing, I’m sure it will be appreciated.
